How Almi Invest invests in startups

When we invest, we come in early as an active owner and long-term partner. We always invest alongside private investors and work closely with the company to support sustainable growth.

How an investment from Almi Invest works

When we invest, we purchase shares in the company and become a minority shareholder. We work actively alongside the team, providing strategic support, board-level involvement and access to our network.

We always invest together with private investors, giving companies access to more capital, broader expertise and stronger opportunities for growth.

We invest together – never alone

As a state-owned venture capital company, we always invest alongside independent co-investors.

This means:

  • The company gains access to more capital
  • Additional investors contribute expertise and networks
  • Risk is shared among several parties

We often act as a bridge between startups and private venture capital investors.

How much do we invest?

We typically invest:

  • SEK 1–4 million in the first funding round
  • SEK 5–10 million through our GreenTech Fund

We may also participate in follow-on investment rounds as the company develops and meets its milestones.

What happens after the investment?

We are an active owner, not just a financial investor.

This means that after the investment we often:

  • Take a seat on the board
  • Work closely with the management team
  • Contribute strategy, structure and networks
  • Support the company with everything from recruitment to future fundraising rounds

The Investment Manager responsible for the investment follows the company over time and acts as an active partner through both opportunities and challenges.

We invest broadly, with a focus on potential

We invest in innovative startups across a wide range of sectors. What matters most is the company’s potential to scale and establish a strong market position.

Our investment areas include:

  • Tech and Deep Tech
  • Industry
  • Life Science
  • Sustainability

The deciding factor is not the sector itself, but the company’s ability to scale, the strength of its team and its growth potential.

Investments with a climate focus

The GreenTech Fund is a strategic initiative from Almi Invest designed to support innovations that benefit both the climate and nature. Venture capital from the GreenTech Fund is aimed at companies that reduce carbon emissions, protect natural resources or restore ecosystems.

Our focus is on businesses that create measurable benefits for both the climate and the natural environment.

Frequently asked questions about how we invest

Find answers to some of the most common questions about how we invest, co-invest and work with our portfolio companies.

Do you invest alone or always alongside other investors?

As a state-owned venture capital company, we are required to invest alongside independent co-investors. We can therefore never invest on our own.

This approach helps us share risk, provide companies with access to more capital, valuable networks and additional expertise.

In this way, we act as a bridge to private venture capital and create stronger conditions for startups to grow and succeed.

Do we need to have co-investors in place before pitching to Almi Invest?

No. It is not a requirement to have co-investors in place before pitching to Almi Invest.

Some companies approach us with existing investors already committed, while others have not yet assembled an investor syndicate.

The structure of each funding round varies. In some cases, we actively help identify and bring together co-investors through our network of business angels and venture capital funds. In other cases, the company already has a strong investor base when discussions begin.

The most important factor is that the company and team meet our investment criteria. The structure of the funding round is something we assess together during the investment process.

Can Almi Invest participate in multiple funding rounds over time?

Yes.

We make follow-on investments when a company has achieved key milestones and demonstrates the potential for continued growth.

It is common for us to participate in several funding rounds throughout a company’s growth journey.

What does the collaboration look like after the initial investment?

We act as an active and supportive investor and will often take a seat on the board.

We contribute through strategic discussions, networks, investor introductions and business development support to help companies maximise their growth potential.

The Investment Manager responsible for the investment becomes the company’s primary point of contact within Almi Invest. They remain actively involved throughout the company’s journey, providing strategic guidance through board representation and supporting the company through both opportunities and challenges.

Investment Managers often contribute portfolio support, access to our investor network, recruitment support and assistance with everything from commercialisation to scaling.

Our partnership continues throughout the entire ownership period.

What ownership stake do you typically take?

We generally take a 10–15% ownership stake in the initial funding round and always invest as a minority shareholder.
